MAWIE BIRTHDAY BASH

a blender grease pencil test for my buddy's birthday

· experimental,birthday,animation,3d

Summary

a very quick one day jam using Blender and Animate (and After Effects, of course). i wanted to make her something cute, fun and loopable with some fun music, while trying something new for myself

Process

i watched a very helpful Blender grease pencil tutorial, as well as another on dynamic physics and basic UI controls. i'm not new to 3d at all, but i dont usually model. i'm trained as an animator, so i dont really know what to do when i open a 3d program and am given a cube.

i made the mawie 3d model first. i made it in about 1 hour a few days before making the animation, with the hope of trying something new. i was originally going to try to figure out how to cell shade the model, try to simulate an outline, but i ended up just leaving it a low poly model.

i was listening to music on shuffle while learning to use the grease pencil, and bo en came on. i knew i wanted to use a clip from his song "every day" for this animation, it had the perfect mood. so i made an impromptu "introduction" to the animation in Animate using looping symbols to boil the line.

after finishing the parts, i compositing in After Effects, putting the elements together and making the background colours and the slight noise effects over the whole thing.

Final Product

the video was made with the intention of posting on social media and is in square format. its also very nicely loopable for that instagram/twitter aesthetic
